A drug found to harm both mothers and infants
Historically, Zofran was an anti-nausea medication approved in 1991 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat nausea experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In the 2000s, Zofran, also marketed under its generic name ondansetron, began to be prescribed by doctors to treat morning sickness in pregnant women. However, Zofran was never approved by the FDA for that use. The drug is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. In light of the decision by many doctors to prescribe the drug on an off-label use basis, doctors, hospitals, and the manufacturer of Zofran can all be held legally responsible for the thousands of serious and sometimes fatal birth defects and injuries caused by the drug.
